Province of Catania

Biancavilla is a tiny village with ancient origins rich in culture and history.

Thanks to the presence of natural springs and lava caves, the village of Biancavilla has been inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic Age by Sicani, and later by the Siculi. The foundation of the city dates back to the fifteenth century when a group of Albanian refugees moved from the Balkans, led by Cesare Masi, creating the old town centre. For a short time this tiny town was called “House of the Greeks ” and later in 1599 the name changed to Biancavilla to honour Queen Bianca di Navarra.

The most important monuments of the village are the Botanical Garden; the Basilica di Santa Maria dell’Elemosina, built in the 16th century, has a Latin Cross plan and three naves enriched by wonderful decorations and frescos dating back to the 18th century; the Church of Santa Maria del Rosario displays a fascinating Baroque facade made by Carlo Sada enriched by majestic columns. The interior has a wide nave characterized by the typical Sicilian Baroque style and Corinthian columns enriched by frescos and sculptures.

Close to the village it is possible to visit the ruins of five ancient water mills; Rollo, Fontanavecchia, Spasimo, Mezzo and Ultimo, also known as Ciappe. They were used to grind grain and legumes to get flour. The farmers also used to grind chickpeas, beans and lentils and with their “special flour” they made bread and pasta in times of famine. Today the village preserves this tradition of cooking the Frascatuli which is considered a sort of Sicilian polenta made with these special flours.
