Bronte

Province of Catania

Bronte is an ancient village rich in history and mythology.

According to the legend, the origin of Bronte dates back to the time of the Cyclops, the mythological gigantic creatures with one eye, who used to live in the area cultivating the fertile lands and extracting minerals from Etna Volcan. The Cyclops who use to live in the area were named Bronte, son of Neptune, Steropes and Argo. The village was founded by Bronte, who ruled and named the town too. The most important monuments of the village are the Museo dell’Antica Civiltà Locale; the Museo del Carretto Siciliano; the Ducea di Nelson which is a complex of three historical buildings: the house- museum of Nelson-Bidport, the ruins of the Maria Santissima Abbey and the tiny church of Santa Maria di Maniace, a wonderful example of Norman sacred architecture in the area; the Church of SS Trinità, built in the first part of the 16th century, has Norman origins and was designed with three naves, a series of highly decorated limestone columns and a precious Baroque marble altar. It is considered as one of the most important monument of the village; the Church of Sacro Cuore has a classical facade and its interior is characterized by one nave enriched by impressive stuccos and Baroque decorations.
