Province of Siracusa

Buccheri was well known to being an important trading centre throughout the Middle Ages.

Buccheri has ancient origins and the discovery of various archaeological ruins testifies the presence of Romans, Byzantines and Arabs settlements in the ancient village. The small village was transformed into a fortress by Normans, they built a castle and around it people started to built the first urban centre. It soon began an important trading centre throughout the Middle Ages, but after the violent earthquake of 1693 started its slowly decline with a massive phenomenon of emigration that marked its development considerably.
The most important monuments of the towns are:
The Chiesa della Maddalena, built with a Baroque style with precious works of art of local artists; the Church of S.Antonio, which has a charming facade of the XX century with frescos and stuccos; the Church of Sant’Ambrogio where it is possible to admire the wooden crucifix dating back to the fifteen century;the Church and Hermitage of Madonna delle Grazie, the Church of the SS.Crocifisso, Church of S. Andrea made with a Norman style enriched by lots of paintings and limestone sculptures.

From Palermo, Caltanissetta, Enna, Agrigento and Trapani 

Take A 19 Palermo – Catania exit “A 18 Tangenziale di Catania – Ragusa – Siracusa”, then follow the A 18 Catania – Siracusa – Gela exit “Siracusa Nord”, then take SS 124 Solarino – Palazzolo exit Buccheri

From Gela and Ragusa 

Take the SS 115 to Ragusa then follow the A 18 Catania – Siracusa – Gela exit “Siracusa Nord”, then take SS 124 Solarino – Palazzolo exit Buccheri
