Burgio is a picturesque medieval village which has a charming old town centre characterized by a series of beautiful ancient churches.
Burgio has ancient origins but there are no well-documented information about its foundation. The name of the village comes from the Arab word “Burg” and it means “tower”.
The most important monuments of the village are the Baronale Castle, the Mummy Museum, the Mother Church of S.Antonio Abate, dedicated to the Patron Saint of Burgio, which is characterized by a Renascence style with a ring bell dating back to the 16th century; the Santuario della Madonna di Rifesi built with a Norman style including a Benedictine Monastery and a tiny Church. Today it is possible to visit only the church.
