Canicattì

Province of Agrigento

Canicattì is a tiny medieval village well known for its charming old town centre.

Located between Agrigento and Caltanissetta, Canicattì is characterised by a medieval old town centre with narrow streets, private courtyards and aristocratic buildings. The most important monuments of the village are the Mother Church, also known as Church of San Pancrazio, it has a Latin cross plan and one nave with two chapels enriched by incredible Bizantine decorations. The Clock Tower is a monument built to honour the old tower destroyed during the Fascism. The Teatro Sociale, built in 1889, was designed by the architect Ernesto Basile replacing the old Carmelite convent. It displays  a very beautiful structure made by Doric columns, wrought iron gates and impressive decorated windows.
