Ferla is well known for its incredible archaeological sights where it is possible to admire the Dioniso Tomb.
The first settlements of this Ferla are connected to the Necropolis of Pantalica, dating back to the Prehistorical period. Like most of the towns in the Noto Valley, Ferla was at the epicentre of the tragic earthquake of 1693 that completely destroyed it. The old town centre was later completely rebuilt with impressive churches and aristocratic palaces.
The church of San Sebastiano, considered the largest church of the village, was built in 1481 with three naves including the important relics of San Giovanni Battista, San Sebastiano, Santa Lucia and Santo Stefano.
The church of Sant’Antonio Abate has a Greek cross plan with a charming Baroque facade; The Mother Church of San Giacomo Apostolo, with an impressive Baroque style, is well known for the incredible archaeological findings discovered here
If you want to discover more about this amazing place you can visit the archaeological area of San Martino – San Sisto – San Leonardo which includes the oldest necropolis of Ferla with massive rock tombs such as the Dioniso Tomb, the catacomb of Sant’ Anna and a rock church where it is possible to admire a fresco representing Sant’Anna and San Pietro Apostolo.
