Province of Syracuse

Lentini is a little village with wonderful ancient holy places. 

Lentini is an ancient Greek city founded in 729 BC. Conquered by barbarians in 535 AC it become an important archbishop’s residency.
After the Arab colonization in the eleventh century, Federico II begun to construct a new castle, creating an important stronghold.
Today this tiny village provides many cultural attractions such as the Mother Church of Santa Maria la Cava and Sant’Alfio, rebuilt in 1693 with the typical Baroque style, it has three naves and a highly decorated wooden main entrance, while inside holds the wonderful Byzantine painting of the Madonna Odigitria. In Lentini you’ll also find the Church of Santissima Trinità and San Marziano which preserves a stunning floor made with the precious Ceramics of Caltagirone from the eighteenth century.
The prison of Tre Santi is a rock cave where the Church of Sacro Carcere dei Tre Santi is located. According to the legend, in this place Sant’Alfio Cirino and San Filadelo were brutally tortured. In addition the Archaeological museum shows the history of Lenten from the Prehistorical period to the Medieval age displaying many incredible findings.

Frogs (“Larunchi”)considered as one of the most important food of the area cooked;

The bread of Lentini baked with durum wheat flour and sesame seeds.

Attractions:

Festa del Pane e del “Cudduruni”, it is a small festival created to promote the typical focacce of Lentini.

From Palermo, Caltanissetta, Enna, Agrigento and Trapani

Take A 19 Palermo – Catania exit “A 18 Tangenziale di Catania – Ragusa – Siracusa”, then follow A 18 Catania – Siracusa – Gela, exit “Lentini – Carlentini”, then take SS 114 exit SS 194 to Catania – Ragusa

From Gela and Ragusa

take SS 115 exit Ragusa, follow A 18 Catania – Siracusa – Gela exit “Lentini – Carlentini”.
