Letojanni is a tiny and charming fishermen village with an ancient history.
The town of Letojanni finds its origins in the history of Sicily. Most of the cities of the Ionian side of the island were founded when the Moor stopped trying to invade the island, and the inhabitants of the hills started moving towards the coast. For this reason, in the eighteenth century the area of Letojanni was occupied only by a few buildings where the fishermen lived.
The most important monuments of the village are the Palazzo Silipigni, built in 1800 by Lorenzo Silipigni; the Palazzo Fleres-Tornatore, built in 1834 by Don Carmelo Carpita; the Palazzo Garufi, built in 1823 by Giovanbattista Melita; the Palazzo Durante looks like a Castle and was built in 1902 by Francesco Durante; the Palazzo Tornatore erected in 1818 by Vincenzo Tornatore; the Palazzo Mauro built in 1834 by Antonio Paladini; the Palazzo Cingari built in 1847, by Domenico Melita; the Palazzo Lo Turco is a majestic building erected in the 20th century which hosted the famous German painter Ottone Geleng; the Palazzo Cacopardo, built in 1815 by Leonardo Capopardo di Gallodoro; the Palazzo Bucceri has a fascinating facade characterized by an impressive battlements; the Palazzo della Cultura includes the Museum of Siciliana Art and Culture where visitors can discover a collection of Caltagirone ceramics and traditional objects displaying the ancient custom and tradition of the island; the Memorial dedicated to Francesco Durante made by the famous Sicilian painter Ettore Ximenes; the Church of San Giuseppe includes wonderful works of art dating back to the 18th century.
