Province of Messina

Librizzi is a tiny village located in the province of Messina rich in wonderful ancient churches and incredible works of art.

The village of Librizzi originates from the Middle Age and was founded by a noble named Bartolomeo Alangona in 1392. Later it was conquered and administered by Lord Martin I, who donated it to Eleonora Centrelles. Like most of the nearby villages it was dominated by Spanish until the unification of Italy. The most important monuments of the village are:
the Church of Maria della Catena, rebuilt in 1850, include an impressive marble statue of the Madonna made by the popular Sicilian artist Antonino Gagini in 1540; the Church of St. Paul, built in 2004, is considered one of the most interesting modern sacred places in Italy; the Church of the Archangel Michael, better known as the Church of Matrice, is a wonderful example of fifth-teen century architecture which was built with a Greek cross plan and a single aisle.
