Licata

Province of Agrigento/Licata

Licata is rich in cultural attractions such as the charming Art Nouveau villas located in its downtown centre.

Licata has ancient origins dating back to the Prehistoric period, the Badia Archaeological Museum contains many important findings which testify to its ancient past. The territory of Licata was the location of many important historical events such as the Himera battle(480 BC), the naval battle of Cape Ecnomus (256 BC – First Punic War), and the Allied landing (1943 World War II invasion of Sicily). The most important monuments of the village are:
the Sant’Angelo Castle, a fortress built in the 17th century by Hernando da Petigno, includes an archaeological area where you can discover the ruins of the ancient Greek city of Monte Sant’Angelo; the Church of Sant’Angelo, built in the 12th century, has three naves with a Baroque style; the Torre di Gaffe San Nicola, a watchtower built in the second half of the 16th century; the Palazzo Bosio and Plazzi Frangiapane are impressive Baroque buildings erected in the 17th century and designed by the architect Bovio.

Close to the downtown centre it is possible to admire many charming Art Nouveau villas such as Villa Verderame, Villa Sapio Rumbolo, Villa Urso, Villa Lumia and Villa Giuliana.
