Longi

Province of Messina

Longi is located at 620 metres above sea level, in a place where the beauty of nature merges with an amazing view of the surrounding areas.

Longi is a small pearl of the province of Messina located in the Nebrodi mountains. The village has ancient origins and it was occupied by Greeks, Byzantines and Arabs. Its name changed many times through time: it evolved from Castrum Longum to Longum, to Alongi to the current one. This characteristic small town is located at 620 metres above sea level, in a place where the beauty of nature merges with an amazing view of the surrounding areas. The town is built around the castle, a beautiful building dating back to the twelveth-century that is still almost intact in spite of the action of time. Longi kept his medieval appearance thanks to its narrow streets, its stone stairways and its steep sloping streets. The town is dedicated to keep its traditions alive, starting from the typical homemade bread to sweets and culinary specialities like the salami made with the meat of the black pigs of the Nebrodi mountains. The popular fair of the black pigs is, in fact, renowned throughout the whole region. There are also many artisanal activities that have been passed on for generations and are still kept alive by villagers. These small activities allow the town to grow and to let the world know about its existence.

The most important monuments of the village are the Mother Church, erected in the 15th century, includes a precious pipe organ dating back to the 17th century and some important paintings made by the Sicilian artist Novelli. The church is dedicated to S.Michele Arcangelo and the interior displays the typical elements of the Sicilian Baroque decorations made by the Maestro Vanaria; the Church of S.Annunziata built in the 16th century has a lavish Baroque style; the ruins of Church SS.Salvatore are a charming location which host important cultural events during the year; the Archaeological area of Rocche del Castro contains some medieval ruins, the Mangalaviti Forest which includes a prominent vegetation made by rare example of beech, maple, ash trees and wild rose and the Mualazzo Lake characterized by the presence of a particular seaweed which turns the colour of the water into a beautiful luxuriant red.
