Marina di Ragusa

Marina di Ragusa is a tiny medieval village famous Gioco del palo (Lignu n’sivatu), taking place by the port on the morning of August 15.

Marina di Ragusa is part of the district of Ragusa, but its old name was Mazzarelli. Its fortune came at the end of 19° century, thanks to the trade of pitch stone and carobs with the English.
The most important event organise by the village is the Gioco del palo (Lignu n’sivatu), taking place by the port on the morning of August 15, here participants have to cross a pole mounted on a fishing boat to get to the other side of it; the pole is greased with oil, so many fall in the water and it is a very hilarious moment. The first one who manages to catch the flag at the end of the pole is awarded with a cash prize. But in last few years the town geared up to offer tourists a rich summer schedule with sports and cultural events such as the National Beach Volley Tournament, outdoor cinema and theatre, music and concerts.
Nearby Marina di Ragusa it is also possible to visit a very interesting small town, Scoglitti. This village was very important in the 20th century thanks to its warehouses for fish salting, which are now dismantled. The most important attractions of this tiny village are the beautiful 800s St. Francis church, the Portosalvo Madonna Church and its Lighthouse.
