Mineo

Province of Catania

Mineo is a medieval village located in the province of Catania which was considered as an important stronghold by Arabs.

The first settlement of Mineo was founded by Siculi and later conquered by Ducezio in 459 BC during the Roman colonization. Considered as an important stronghold by Arabs, the village was acquired by Giovanni d’Aragona and later in 1398 it became part of the proprieties of the aristocratic family Moncada. The village offers some interesting cultural attractions such as the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore built in the 3nd century BC, is one of the oldest sacred building located in the province of Catania. Its majestic facade displays a mix of the three classical architectural orders (Doric, Ionic and Corinthian style) which characterise the building with incredible decorations; the Church of Santa Agrippina, erected after the 1163 earthquake, includes wonderful stuccos and frescos made by the painter Sebastiano Monaco in the 18th century. The church has a Greek cross plan and three naves divided by a series of columns and a central dome; the Church of San Pietro has a Latin cross plan and three naves including precious works of art such as its main altar, some bas reliefs and a majestic crucifix made in the 17th century.

The old town centre is dominated by the Serravalle Castle which was erected in the 13th century with a squared plan and the typical medieval watching towers and the Mongialino Castle which was built in the 14th century with an irregular polygonal plan and walls with medieval battlements.
