Niscemi is a tiny village with a charming old town centre characterised by many interesting cultural attractions.
The oldest village of Niscemi, historically named “Fata-nascim”, was founded by Arabs in the 9th century. Later, Normans conquered the area creating the most important buildings of the current old town centre.
The most important monuments are:
the Church of Santa Maria d’Itria, the Church of Addolorata built in 1753 by the architect Silvestro Guiugliara; the Church of Maria SS della Grazia, built in 1773; the Santuario Maria SS del Bosco, built from 1749 to 1758 by Silvestro Gugliara with a Baroque style; the Belvedere, a wonderful terrace built with a Baroque style, offers a stunning view of the Gela’s valley and Maroglio river; the Archaeological site of Pitrusa includes precious findings dating back to the Greek and Roman periods.
Close to the village there is the famous Sughereta di Niscemi Nature Reserve.
