Piana degli Albanesi

Province of Palermo

Piana degli Albanesi is considered one of the most important Arbëreshe colonies in Sicily.

Piana degli Albanesi, previously known as Piana dei Greci, was founded in the Middle Ages. It is considered one of the most important Arbëreshe colonies (decedents of Albanian refugees) in Sicily, maintaining the typical traits of Albanian culture; preserving their language, customs and religion. The village was known to being very active during the revolutionary revolts organised for the unification of Italy in the first part of the eighteen century. Thanks to its massive cultural productions, Piana degli Albanesi is considered the birthplace of Arbëreshe literature. Here the first masterpiece of the Albanian literary, the Diaspora (1592) was created, and the first school in Sicily where it was possible to study Albanian language and culture. Its University was included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
Close to the village, located in the Contrada Sant’Anna it’s possible to visit the ancient village of Pirama, an impressive Paleochristian necropolis and charming abandoned manor farms.
