Priolo Gargallo

Province of Siracusa

Priolo Gargallo has ancient origins probably dating back to the eigth century.

Priolo Gargallo is considered a very ancient village, in fact recent archaeological digs have uncovered incredible findings of the first settlement named Trogulos, dating back to the eigth century. Today it is possible to visit the “modern” village founded in 1809 by the marquess Tommaso Gargallo.

The most important sacred building of the village is the Church of Santa Maria Immacolata, built in 1860 it was notably damaged by World War II bombing and then redesigned with impressive sculptures created by the artist Antonio Leone. The Church of Angelo Custode is the most ancient building of the village, built to host the rising aristocratic class of Priolo Gargallo in 1814.

The Basilica of San Focà is one of the most impressive paleo-Christian churches in Italy. It is considered the main attraction of Pirolo Gargallo, built in 343 AC by a Bishop of Syracuse named Germano. In 1700 the cathedral was completely renovated after the violent 1693 earthquake.

This charming tiny village includes a spectacular naturalistic environment, the Nature Reserve of Saline di Priolo. This green area has been created to preserve the salt pans and the avifauna of this area. It was awarded with an acknowledgement of “The most beautiful Oasis of Italy” in 2008.
