San Giovanni la Punta

Province of Catania

San Giovanni La Punta is an ancient village rich in history and traditions which was ruled by some of the most important noble family in Sicily.

The first settlement of San Giovanni la Punta was called San Giovanni De Nemore, deriving from the Latin word “nemus” which means forest. After a violent eruption that stopped in front of a sculpture of San Giovanni Evangelista, the town changed its name to the current one. The village was included in the city of Catania for a long time and only in 1646 it was acquired by the Massa family, dukes of Aci Castello, who ruled the feudal town until the abolition of the feudal rights. In 1693, the village, which hosted only 1,200 inhabitants, was completely destroyed by a strong earthquake.

Today it is possible to visit two beautiful ancient churches that survived the earthquake; the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1380 and renovated in 1728 and the Santuario Madonna della Ravanusa, erected in the 17th century.
