San Marco d’Alunzio

Province of Messina

San Marco d’Alunzio is a small village which is well known for its charming churches and interesting cultural attractions.

San Marco d’Alunzio was founded in the 4th century BC. The village prospered under the Greek domination and they named this first settlement Alontion creating its own currency. During the Punic Wars the village was conquered by Romans who renamed the town Aluntium introducing important economic and cultural activities. Later it was conquered by Byzantines, who called the village, Demenna, and then by Arabs who built an important fortress in the area to control their proprieties. Its current name comes from the Normans who chose the name of San Marco to honour the Saint the first city conquered in Calabria. In the 11th century, Robert Guiscard of Hauteville chose the feudal town as the base for his conquest of Sicily. In this period he built the Monastery of Benedictine monks and the Church of Santissimo Salvatore. The most important monuments of the village are:
the Mother Church, built between 1584 and 1800, includes some precious red marble; the Church of Santa Maria in Ara Coeli, erected in the 12th century; the Church of San Basilio, built in the Middle Age, includes impressive frescos; the Church of Santissimo Salvatore, built in the 12th century on the ruins of a Roman temple; the Church of S. Maria delle Grazie, built in 1900; the Brazilian Museum displays a collection of objects, archaeological findings and minerals from Brazil; the Parish Sacred Art Museum contains objects, paintings and vestments collected in the oldest churches of the village; the Byzantine and Norman Culture and Fine Arts Museum is a very famous museum in Sicily which is divided into three sections: Archaeology, Byzantine-Norman Fine arts and the Middle Ages in the Nebrodi Area. The museum includes some archaeological findings dating back to the 4th and 3rd century, a collection of over 200 coins dating back to the 5th to the 15th century AC and the two huge amphorae found in Tusa and dated XIV-XV century; the Norman Castle was built on the ruins of an ancient pre-existing castle. It was erected on top of Mount Rotondo in a strategic position to allow the control of the Tyrrhenian coast.
