Province of Ragusa

Santa Croce Camerina was first mentioned by King Roger II of Sicily in 1151. In 1470 the village was handed over to the baron Pietro Celesti, who began renovating the town.

There are two lovely Baroque churches, the Mother Church of S. Giovanni Battista and the Chiesetta del Carmine. Archaeological and historical sights include the Ruderi of Caucania, where you can visit the ruins of residences and workshops dating back to the 3rd century BC and 8th century AC; the Necropolis of Mirio with over 100 elaborate tomb monuments of the Chistian -Bizantine period; the Archaeological Park of Kaukana, which includes 25 buildings with kitchen tools, furnishings, coins and artefacts of the Roman period.
