Province of Messina

Torrenova is a small ancient village located in the province of Messina. 

The first settlement of Torrenova is dating back to the Prehistoric Age; later it was conquered by Romans and Byzantine. The feudal town was ruled by some of the most important aristocratic families in Sicily such as Filangieri, Greco-Cappelletti, Vergara, Gullotti and Bianco. The current village was included in the San Marco d’Alunzio municipality until the 20th century.
The most important monuments of the village are:
the Favara Tower or Torre Marco; the Cuffari Tower; the Scodonì Cave; the Monastery of San Pietro di Deca was an important place of worship and an organic farm; the Gatto Tower, also known as Torre Nova, was built in 1782 as a watchtower; the Pietra di Roma Castle, built in the eighteenth century by Antonio Meli. During the Arab domination the castle was considered as an important stronghold.
