Churches, monuments and culture in Sutera
Sutera is a small village located on the top of Mount San Paolino and is characterised by a Medieval old town centre with narrow limestone streets. One of the most important cultural attractions of the village is the Mother Church, dedicated to Maria SS Assunta, which was built in 1374 by Giovanni III di Chiaromonte on the ancient ruins of an Arab mosque. The church has three naves including impressive golden stuccos.
Along with the mother church there is the Santuario Diocesano San Paolino, located on the top of Mount San Paolino it offers a stunning view of the coastline and Mount Etna in the distance. Here it’s also possible to visit the Sant’Onofrio Hermitage framed by a prominent pine forest. Nearby the village you can also find the Rock of San Marco, a large cave 70 meters deep that contains huge Byzantine frescos.
The Francesco Salomone Palace is an aristocratic building erected by the Salomone family in the 15th century. The Ethno-Archaeological Museum.
