Villafranca is the ideal place where you can spend your holidays in contact with the nature.
The territory of Villafranca Tirrena is part of the province of Messina and is located between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the village of Saponara. The first settlement of the village was founded in the 1271 by King Charles D’Angiò and it included the old feudal towns of Bauso and Calvaruso. Villafranca Tirrena is famous for the “Bamparizzu” which is considered as an example of the local traditional folklore. It is a ceremony that takes place on 5 December, before the procession of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of Villafranca. Here the villagers set a fire in the middle of the main square after the Mass, creating a very evocative and picturesque atmosphere.
The most important monuments of the village are the Conte Castle built in 1907; the Castle Gardens which was built with stones and glass of different colours and includes majestic works of art such as the “Fountain of the Four Lions” made by the Florentine sculptor Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli; the Museum of Medicine and Musical instruments, created in 2004, is located in an ancient Art Nouveau building including over 200 rare scientific objects dating from the late eighteenth century and 1940.
