Aeolian Museum

Lipari Island

The Aeolian Museum is considered the heart of the cultural activities of the archipelago.

The Aeolian Museum (Regional Aeolian Archeological Museum “Luigi Bernabò Brea”) is located on the top of the majestic rock of the Castello, an imposing volcanic formation. Thanks to its position, the Castello was an important natural stronghold where its inhabitants settled to find refugee from the violent barbarian incursions. This impressive rock rises between Marina Lunga and Marina Corta offering a breathtaking view of the island. The museum is considered the heart of the cultural activities of the Aeolian Islands because it collects a wide variety of findings from the Bronze, Greek and Roman ages and an urban plan dating back to the 2nd century BC. Luigi Benabò and Madeline Cavalier founded the Aeolian Museum after the incredible archeological digs began in the 1950’s. The museum has six sections: the Pre-historic Section includes a collection of findings dating back to the 10th and 9th century BC; the Epigraphical Section where there are located some lithic sarcophagi from the excavations of the Greek necropolis; the Minor Islands Section exhibits collections dating back to the Neolithic, Aeneolithic and Bronze Age uncovered in Salina, Panarea, Filicudi, Alicudi and Stromboli; the Classical Section, hosts the ruins of a Greek necropolis and impressive findings from the Roman and Middle Age. Here you can also admire numerous numismatics and jewellery exhibitions dating back to the 5th century BC. The last two areas of the museum are the Volcano Section which drives visitors into the geomorphological history of the Archipelago highlighting most aspect of the human settlements over the centuries and the Quaternary Section dedicated to a wonderful cosllection of fossil-bearing deposits mostly discovered in Lipari and Panarea.

The Aeolian Museum also offers easy-access computer stations where visitors can discover more information related to the museum and the history of Sicily.
