The Church of San Giorgio is a marvellous ancient church dedicated to the Patron Saint of Ragusa Ibla.
The Church of San Giorgio is a typical example of the well known Sicilian Baroque. Along with San Giovanni, San Giorgio is one of the patron saints of Ragusa Ibla, and the devotion to this saint was brought here during the Normans period. This church was almost destroyed by the 1693 earthquake and so Rosario Gagliardi redesigned and rebuilt on the ruins of the original.
The charming façade has columns and Baroque decorative elements, the portal shows a pointed arch of Gothic-Catalan style decorated with carvings. The church has been built with a Latin cross plan and inside there are three naves, and visitors can admire 33 amazing stained glass windows representing the martyrdom of St. George.
From the square you can enjoy a view of the majestic dome and the large and high staircase of the church, considered two masterpieces of international architecture.
