The Church of San Placido is a wonderful holy place located in the charming old town centre of Catania.
The Church of San Placido was built in 1420 on the ruins of an ancient pagan temple dedicated to Bacchus. The church was completely destroyed by the 1693 earthquake which caused the collapse of many buildings and ancient churches in the city.
The Church of San Placido rises up in a beautiful small square close to Sant’Agata cathedral. The redesign of the facade has been completed by Stefano Ittar, the co-architect of Porta Garibaldi who conveyed the typical elegance of the Baroque style to the new building; but due to its tiny area the interior of the church has only a single aisle.
