Fiume Freddo Nature Reserve

Province of Catania

The Fiume Freddo Nature Reserve is an extended green area which protects a series of rare trees and cultivations.

The Fiume Freddo river is made by two sources, Quadara and Capo dacqua and flows through the lowland area for 2km close to the Fiume Freddo village.
The nature reserve is about 10 hectares and is well known for the preservation of the river habitat.
The Mediterranean flora grows along the river despite the coldness of the water, and the surrounding area has lots of interesting cultivation such as the rare Cyperus papyrus siculus and a prominent wetlands vegetation.
The reserve provides guided tours every day from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm, and on Tuesday and Thursday from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm.

How to get there:

Follow the SS 114 Messina – Catania, exit Fiumefreddo di Sicilia and then take the Strada Provinciale direction to Marina di Cottone where the main entrance of the reserve is located.
