On Monte Cammarata Nature Reserve, it is possible to find lots of ruins belonging to the many colonies who conquered this land.
The Monte Cammarata Nature Reserve became part of the Sicani Mountains Park in 2012. In the reserve you’ll find the Santuario di Santa Rosalia di Santo Stefano di Quisquina, an eighteenth-century Hermitage located 1000 meters above sea level and surrounded by a small forest of oak trees. According to the legend, the Patron Saint of Palermo found refuge in this fascinating location before moving to Mount Pellegrino.
Its name comes from the Sicani colonisation, the first inhabitants of the area who introduced wheat farming into the island. In this beautiful area, it is possible to find lots of ruins belonging to the many colonies who conquered this land, including Arabs, Normans, Swabian Angevin, Aragon and the Spanish.
