Nature Reserve of Bosco di Alcamo

Province of Trapani

Nature Reserve of Bosco di Alcamo covers a wonderful area located between Palermo and Mount Erice.

Established in 1984, the Nature Reserve of Bosco di Alcamo is located on the top of the Mount Bonifato including the vast limestone complex placed on the west coast of the island between the provinces of Palermo and Mount Erice. Framed by the marvellous Mediterranean vegetation, the ruins of the small medieval village of Bunifat provide a very charming landscape you shouldn’t miss. Thanks to the abundant presence of water and thanks to its ideal geographical location the Mountain was considered a strategic point to control the Gulf of Castellammare and a perfect place to create a new settlement. For these reasons the Elimi settled there their main colony after having conquered Segesta.

The nature reserve also includes the fascinating church of Madonna dell’Alto, which was built in the seventeenth century on the ruins of a fourteenth century castle of the Ventimiglia.
