Nature Reserve of Saline di Trapani e Paceco

Province of Trapani

Nature Reserve of Saline di Trapani e Paceco includes prominent flora and fauna where there are 208 species of rare animals.

The Nature Reserve of Saline di Trapani e Paceco is located between Trapani and the tiny village of Paceco. It was created in 1995 and today it is managed by the WWF. The structures created for the processing of salt merges with the natural landscape creating a unique and deeply charming environment. It is one of the few examples where the human productive activities have not destroyed the environment but rather they have enhanced and safeguarded it. It is recommended to visit the reserve at sunset because each salt pan takes different colours ranging from pink, to red and golden.

The Nature Reserve has prominent flora and fauna where there are 208 species of rare animals such as flamingos, white herons, the rare peregrine falcon. For those interested in flora, the nature reserve protects the Chenopodiacee, a small bush that is just one of the many typical plants that grow near the Saline, and the Calendula maritima, which is one of its most precious.
The most important attraction of the Reserve is the Mushroom of Malta, which is not a mushroom but actually a rare parasitic plant.

How to get there:
