The Pergusa Lake Nature Reserve includes the interesting archaeological site of Cozzo Matrice.
The Pergusa lake is the only natural lake located in the centre of Sicily, 10km away from the province of Enna. The lake water comes from the rain as the lake doesn’t have tributaries.
The natural reserve was established in 1995 and it preserves a great number of migratory birds and some sedentary species such as the coot, gulls and moorhens. Close to the lake, it is possible to visit the archaeological site of Cozzo Matrice to see the ruins of an amazing ancient temple dedicated to Demeter, and the tombs of the necropolis dating back to the VI-V sec. B.C.
How to get there:
Take A19 Catania – Palermo, exit Enna and then take the SS 561 to Pergusina.
