Santa Maria La Nova Cathedral is a well preserved example of late renaissance architecture, located in the heart of the old town centre.
The cathedral of Santa Maria La Nova is truly beautiful, one of the most magnificent in Sicily. Unlike most cathedrals in Sicily built in Baroque style, this cathedral presence a late renaissance aesthetic. Situated in the heart of the historic centre of the city, in Piazza Garibaldi, it faces the 16th century church of San Sebastiano. This cathedral dominates the square for its grandeur and with its two bell towers.
The construction of this cathedral started in 1570 from the will of the Nisseni – the locals of Caltanissetta- but it did not open for the public till 1622. The Cathedral of Santa Maria La Nova is well known for the well preserved and beautifully executed paintings from the Flamish painter Guglielmo Borremans. The interior structure is based on a latin cross layout. It is divided in three naves and has 14 arches, each one dedicated to a character of the old testament. In the middle of the cross layout you find the high-large cupola. Inside the cathedral there are a series of precious objects and statues more than well worth a visit!
