Assoro is a tiny village located in the province of Enna with incredible ancient origins.
Located on Mount “La Stella”, the village of Assoro was founded by Siculi. Later this tiny village was conquered by Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans and Normans.
The most important monuments of the village are the Castle, built in the first part of the 13th century by Normans and it was designed by the same architect who built the Ursino Castle in Catania; the Cathedral of San Leone, built in 1492 by Costanza d’Altavilla, is a gem of Sicily heritage, considered one of the most important National Monument in Italy. The church has a Latin Cross plan and three naves enriched by Arab and Catalan decorations; it includes precious works of art made by the popular artist Vincenzo Archifel.
The Church of Spirito Santo, built in the 13th century, is dedicated to the Patron Saint of Assoro. The Church of Maria SS degli Angeli was built in 1622 and it holds a huge library and impressive Baroque paintings.
