Avola

Province of Siracusa

Avola is an ancient village offers a wonderful landscape since it’s nested between Ionio sea and Ibleo mountains.

Avola stretches out along the coast, in Siracusa’s southern territory, along one of the most ancient Greek roads in Sicily: Via Elorina. Its area is an extraordinary receptacle of cultural and natural resources and the city is a gate for them. Avola is located in a wonderful landscape since it’s nested between Ionio sea and Ibleo mountains, that is between a coast with warm, fine sandy beaches on one side and the smells and cool air of Ibleo mountains surrounding it on the other. This charming town has many must-see masterpieces like the San Giovanni Battista Church, the most important church of the town. The town’s churches are interestingly varied and they feature a unique style, being part of this village’s picturesque atmosphere.
The most relevant ones are: Chiesa Madre, San Nicolò e San Sebastiano, Chiesa di Santa Venera, Chiesa di S. Antonio Abate, Chiesa della Santa Croce,  Chiesa di S. Maria del Gesù, Chiesa della Madonna Delle Grazie, Chiesa dell’Immacolata, and finally the Chiesa della SS. Annunziata, characterized by its convex face that became one of the most representative of the Baroque style.
Museums enthusiasts will have the chance to discover numerous ancient finds from the ancient part of town in its Museo Civico. Avila is famous all over the world for its “perfectly oval” almonds, as Leonardo Sciascia wrote, and for Nero d’Avola, from the namesake vineyard.
