Cammarata

Province of Agrigento

Cammarata is an ancient village which was ruled by some of the most important noble families in Sicily.

The name Cammarata derives from the Greek-Bizantine word “Kàmara” and it means “vaulted room”. The foundation of the village is dating back to the Norman period when the land was donated to Lucia “De Camerata” who ruled until 1154. Later this tiny village was also ruled by important Sicilian aristocratic family such as: Vinciguerra, Moncada, Abatellis and Branciforti.

The most important monuments of Cammarata are:

the Castle was built in the 13th century by the family of Cammarata. Today it is possible to visit only a small part of the building which hosts the religious institute “Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice”; the Mother Church, dedicated to San Nicolò di Bari, has three naves and includes impressive works of art dating back to the 15th century; the Church of Annunziata built in the sixteenth-century, has one nave including charming stuccos with golden decorations.
