Casalvecchio Siculo is a typical medieval village characterized by narrow streets and charming Arabs and Spanish buildings. Thanks to its location, the village offers a wonderful view of the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna.

Located on the top of Mount Elia, Casalvecchio Siculo is 29km from Messina and 20km from Taormina. It is a typical medieval village characterized by narrow streets and charming Arabs and Spanish buildings. Thanks to its location, the village offers a wonderful view of the Strait of Messina and Mount Etna. The most important cultural attractions of the village are the Mother Church of Sant’Onofrio, built in 1117 by Roger II, which has a beautiful Baroque facade enriched by some sculptures made with the local limestones and the interior including an impressive floor created with precious colourful marbles. The church also contains important paintings created by the Sicilian artist Gaspare Camarda in 1622.

The Church of Santi Pietro and Paolo d’Agrò is considered as one of the oldest architecture in Sicily erected in 560 BC. The church is a good combination of different styles including some Byzantine elements such as the capitals and the cross located on the main entrance, Arabs’ domes and the Norman three naves plan enriched by two towers.

Moreover the Church of Annunziata was built in the 15th century and contains important paintings representing San Nicolò; the Church of Santissima Annunziata, built in the 16th century, has a Baroque style with splendid stuccos; the Ancient portal with the Cross of the Knights of Malta, erected in 1950; the Parish Museum hosts a collection of sacred objects, ancient books and paintings belonged to the most important holy places of the village.

Close to Casalvecchio Siculo it is possible to visit some nice ancient villages such as Rimiti, Misitano, San Pietro, Mitta, San Carlo and Rafale.
