Santa Lucia del Mela is an ancient medieval town located in the beautiful province of Messina.
The village of Santa Lucia del Mela was founded in the Middle Age by Byzantines, who built a majestic fortress in the area. Later the Arabs conquered the village creating a wonderful mosque on the top of the hill. Roger I defeated Arabs and included the village in his proprieties, building many impressive churches to spread the Christian religion over the area. The most important cultural attractions of the village are the Parish Museum; the Cathedral, built by Roger I in 1094 with one nave; the Castle, erected in the 12th century; the Church of Annunziata, built in the 15th century, has three naves with 10 columns with a Corinthian style; the Church of Sacro Cuore, erected in 1500, was completely renovated in 1881; the Diocesano Museum of Prelatura includes sacred paintings and vestments dating back to the 16th and 18th century.
