Sant’Alessio Siculo

Sant’Alessio Siculo offers a wonderful medieval atmosphere with its narrow streets, charming churches and aristocratic buildings.

The village of Sant’Alessio Siculo was founded in the Middle Age. Thanks to the development of coastal roads throughout the region, the village prospered recording an important population growth. Like most of the nearby villages it was dominated by Spanish until the unification of Italy. The most important cultural attractions of the village are the Capo S. Alessio Castle, built between 1048 to 1118 by Emperor Alessio I Comneno. In 1676, the Castle became the food storage of the city of Messina during the was between France and Spain.

Close to the village is still possible to discover the ruins of some ancient kilns used for the treatment of limestone.
