Valverde

Valverde is a little medieval village and it is well known for its impressive festival and cultural attractions. 

The origins of Valverde are linked to the village of Aci up until the 17th century. The current old town centre was founded in the Middle Age when the population of Aci moved from the coast after the violent incursions of Arab pirates. The first village’s name was “Vallis Viridis”, later it was turned into the Sicilian word “Bedduviddi” and then into Valverde. Visiting the old town centre you can discover the charming Santuario di Maria SS di Valverde, an ancient church which was built in the second half of the 13th century and then completely renovated after the 1693 earthquake. At the entrance of the church there is a majestic portal made with white stone which dates back to the early 700s. The main entrance has a late Romanesque style and shows the coat of arms related to the aristocratic family, Riggio. The portal frames a bronze door moulded by Giacomo Petralia during the Church’s last restoration in 1980.
