Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto

Province of Messina

Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto is the home of many sacred and important buildings characterised by an impressive Baroque style.

The first settlements of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto is dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. This small village had great importance during the Norman domination. In fact Normans built the famous Monastery of the Mother of God, which is considered to be one of the most important ancient buildings of the whole Messina’s area. Because of the city’s wealth and power, many noble families inhabited the area, increasing even more the village’s power. One of the most interesting monuments of the village is the Mandanici Theatre, built in 1844. It was the second most important theatre of the whole area and was named after a famous musician, Placido Mandanici, who had been born and raised in the city. Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto is the home of many sacred and important buildings characterised by an impressive Baroque style with beautiful decorations, such as the Dome of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 1620, the Convent of the Friars of the Carmelite Order, the Church of Saint John the Baptist and the Minor Basilica of Saint Sebastian.

Moreover, the village offers many cultural attractions such as the Ethnohistorical Museum Nello Cassata, named after the city’s most important poet and historian. Inside the museum there is an accurate reconstruction of forty-five ancient arts and crafts workshops filled with about twenty thousands ancient tools and objects.

In Gala di Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, a small town close to Barcellona, there is the Epicentro Museum, an ancient farmhouse where it is possible to see a collection of local art. The museum is placed in a panoramic location framed by the typical Mediterranean vegetation.

The Jalari Park and Museum – located in Maloto – houses about fifteen thousands ancient tools and objects exposed inside the reconstructions of forty-two arts and crafts workshops reproducing the atmosphere of the ancient customs and tradition of the village.

The Cave and small temple of Santa Venera is an holy place dedicated to Saint Venera, located in a very evocative place including a natural cave. It was built in 1718 by one of Barcellona’s most influential families,  the Gregorio family. According to the tradition, Saint Venera born and lived there.
