Leonforte has ancient origins dating back to the Byzantine and Arabic periods.
Located in the middle of the Erei mountains, Leonforte rises on the old ruins of the village Tabas. Thanks to the Byzantine sand Arabic eras the village had a special irrigation system where, thanks to the help of mills, they took advantage of the abundance of water and gave new opportunities for agricultural development, especially for olives and fruit. In 1610 the noble Nicolò Placido Branciforte founded a city which he named Leonforte, elevating it to the status of principality.
If you want to discover the story of this tiny village you can visit Palazzo Branciforte where Nicolò Placido Branciforte, the founder of the old town, used to live
