Menfi is an ancient village characterized by impressive cultural attractions.
The territory of Menfi is located on the southwest coast of Sicily and it was inhabited by human settlements since ancient times. The village, historically named Burgiomilluso, was founded under the Spanish domination in 1518 by Giovanni Vincenzo Tagliavia. Later in 1638 the town was acquired by Diego Tagliavia Aragona Cortes who started the construction of the current old town centre.
The most important monuments of Menfi are:
the Swabian castle and Federiciana Tower; the Pignatelli Palace, built in 1638 by Diego Aragona Tagliavia, includes an impressive Necropolis dating back to 330 and 400 AC; the Mother Church, also known as Church of Sant’Antonio di Padova, built in the first part of the 18th century, has three beautiful naves and five arches. The church was completely destroyed by the violent 1968 earthquake and later redesign by the architect Vittorio Gregotti; the Church of San Giuseppe, built in 1715, includes precious stuccos and painting made by Fra Felice da Sambuca, dating back to the 18th century; the Palazzo Ravidà, erected in the last part of the 18th century, is a Neoclassical building made with the typical local sandstone which was the summer resort of the noble family Ravidà Ferrantelli; the Casa Planeta, built by the family Bivona in the second half of the 18th century, hosts the Enoteca della Strada e del Vino delle Terre Sicane and important cultural and food events; the Giardini Pergolati of Inycon is a popular place created to host temporary exhibitions and wine tasting events.
