Oliveri

Oliveri is a fishing village located on Mount Tindari where it is possible to discover an amazing view of the island.

Thanks to its location on the feet of Mount Tindari, Oliveri has a stunning view of the Gulf of Tindari. The name of the town was chosen to honour the warrior Carlo Oliveris. The first settlement was built on Mount Tindari by Dorians, and then, like it happened to many towns and villages in Sicily, it was conquered by Romans, who gave a great contribution to the town’s cultural and economic growth. There is no certain knowledge about the date when the modern Olivieri was founded, but it was probably between 1810 and 1815.

This fascinating village kept its fishing tradition alive until the 1960, when its tuna-fishing zone was still considered as one of the most important ones in Sicily.

The most important monuments of the village are the Castle, a beautiful well preserved building erected by Arabs, was the heart of the old town centre. Today the Castle is a private building and it is not possible to visit its interior; the Tuna-fishing nets and the Laghetti di Marinello Nature Reserve.
