Piazza Armerina is known for its mosaics and its famous Palio dei Normanni festival, one of the most impressive reconstruction of medieval history in South Italy.
Guglielmo d’Altavilla destroyed the old village of Piazza Armerina in 1161 crossing out any sign of the old civilisations who marked the land. Today this charming town is known for its mosaics and its famous Palio dei Normanni festival, one of the most impressive reconstruction of medieval history in South Italy.
Thanks to the amazing climate, mild in winter and cool in the summer, this village is an ideal destination at any point during your travel through Sicily.
Piazza Armerina has many churches and ancient buildings like the Villa Romana, who with its stunning and precious mosaics became a UNESCO World Heritage site after being declared a “supreme example of a luxury villa which illustrates the social and economic structure of its age”. Imposing and majestic, it dominates the entire village from the top of the hill. Built in Baroque style, it was established on the ruins of the old Mother Church, it includes important works of art, precious marbles and old holy vestments. The oldest church of the village is Chiesa Del Priorato di Sant’Andrea which is considered one of the most interesting work of the Sicilian Medieval art thanks to its architecture and its paintings.
