Piedimonte Etneo

Piedimonte Etneo is a wonderful tiny village located at the foot of Mount Etna where it is possible to admire a breathtaking landscape and a stunning natural environment.

Piedimonte Etneo was founded in the seventeenth century and named “Belvedere”, due to its breathtaking landscapes that can be seen from the hill where it is located, at the foot of Mount Etna. The village was part of the proprieties of the aristocratic family Gravina Cruillas, barons of Francofonte and principles of Palagonia, and Ignazio Gravina Cruillas built the old city center in 1650. The most important holy places and cultural attractions of the village are the Mother Church, built between 1711 and 1713, has three naves with a Neoclassical style enriched by Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns. The interior displays coloured marble altars and impressive works of art; the Church of Sant’Ignazio, erected in 1689 and later renovated in 1693 and 1895; the Convent of Cappuccini, built by Prince Ferdinando Francesco, includes incredible masterpieces made by local artists.
