Piraino is an Arab ancient village located in the Province of Messina.
The village of Piraino was founded by Arabs in the Middle Age. In the eighteenth century, the feudal town was acquired by the noble family of Lancia which ruled the village for a long time. The historical events of the village are the same that affected the entire area until the unification of Italy.
The most important monuments of the village are the Church of S.Francesco, the Mother Church of Santa Maria, built in 1500 on the ruins of an ancient church erected in 1200. The church includes impressive ancient works of art and vestments dating back to the 18th century; the Church of Santa Caterina is located on the top of the hill where it is possible to enjoy a wonderful view of the island.
