Riesi is an ancient Arab village located in the province of Caltanissetta.
The current village of Riesi was founded in the 13th century by Arabs. Its name derives from the Arab word “Rahal-Met” which means “abandoned place”. The archaeological digs uncovered the first settlement of the area dating back to the 3rd-2nd millennium BC and interesting findings from Greeks, Romans and Byzantine.
The most important cultural attractions of Riesi are the Old Tower; the Mines of Trabia Tallarita and the Church of Madonna SS della Catena, built in the 18th century, includes impressive frescos and the wonderful Chapel of the Santissimo Crocifisso which holds a precious wooden crucifix made in the 17th century.
