Santo Stefano di Camastra is a charming medieval village located in the province of Messina.
The name of Santo Stefano di Camastra derives from the monastery of S.Croce di Santo Stefano in Val Demone. The name “Camastra” was later added to honour the memory of the duke Giuseppe Lanza who rebuilt the feudal town after the violent landslide in 1682. The new village was created with a geometrical plan designed by the engineer Carlos de Grunenbergh. The most important monument of the village is the Mother Church, dedicated to the Patron Saint S. Nicolò di Bari and built in 1685 with a highly decorated facade. The interior has a Latin Cross plan with 12 Baroque columns and precious frescos dating back to the 18th century. Other important monuments include the Church of Calvario, built in the 19th century; the Church of Maria SS. della Catena which includes the majestic Baroque mural grave of Giuseppe Lanza and Maria Gomez de Silvejra; the Palazzo Armao is a fascinating building created in the 19th century by the noble Gaetano Armao; Federico’s wall, located near the main entrance of the village, displays a series of images depicting the Normans history of Santo Stefano; the 18th century Santuario del Letto Santo is an amazing holy place located 874 meters above the sea; the Palazzo Trabia, built at the end of the 12th century, it has an impressive interior displaying a collection of ancient tiles, traditional objects and hand painted ceramic jars. The building is also enriched by beautiful frescos and ceramic floors made by the Maestri Stefanesi.
