Santo Stefano di Quisquina is a tiny village rich in history and ancient traditions.
The village of Santo Stefano di Quisquina was founded by farmers close to the mouth of the Capo Favara river. Due to the thickly of its forest, Arabs name the village “Coschin” which means “darkness”. The first lord who ruled the feudal town was Giovanni di Caltagirone in 1296 and later many important Sicilian family came in succession.
The most important monuments of the village are the Mother Church, built in the 18th century with three naves and four Doric columns; the Church of San Francesco di Sales, built in 1580, includes impressive stuccos and friezes and a majestic altar made by precious marbles; the Church of San Calogero, considered a gem of the Sicilian architecture, is located on the top of the hill where visitors and faithfuls can enjoy a wonderful view of the island; the Santa Rosalia Hermitage is a monumental Baroque complex erected close to the cave where the Saint found refuge between 1150 and 1162. The interior includes impressive paintings and frescos made by Filippo Pennino and Federico Panepinto.
