Tortorici is a charming tiny village rich in history and cultural attractions.
The village of Tortorici was founded by Greeks and later inhabited by Romans and Byzantine. Under the kingdom of Federico II di Svevia, the feudal town was ruled by the renowned aristocratic family Pomichino, until the 15th century, who built the current old town centre. The most important cultural attractions are:
the Church of St. Francis, rebuilt in 1602 on the ruins of the ancient Church of Santa Maria; the Church of Annunciazione, built in 1757 by Bishop Gaetano Galbato; the “Franchina Letizia” Ethno and Photographic Museum which includes over 40,000 sheets, 10,000 films, 5,000 pictures made by Mons. Calogero Franchina and his niece Marietta Letizia dating back to 1890 – 1980. The museum is also considered as the historical memory of the village; the Fonderia campane “Trusso” is one of the oldest foundry in Sicily built in the last decade of the 19th century; the Sebastiano Franchina Ethno-Anthropological Museum includes an impressive collection of documents related to the ancient Nebrodi civilization. Here it is possible to admire U Cintimulu (a reel) a sort of domestic mill that was used to grind small amounts of grains; the Saraudda, an ancient wheat storage and all the ancient tools used for the typical linen production including the loom for weaving dresses and sheets.
