Trecastagni

Province of Catania

Trecastagni is a charming tiny village located in the Province of Catania characterized by incredible cultural attractions.

Trecastagni has an ancient history which dates back to Roman colonization. The village was included in the city of Catania until 1640 and then acquired by Domenico Di Giovanni. Later, in the early 1700s, Trecastagni became part of Villafranca’s proprieties after the marriage between Giuseppe Alliata, Prince of Villafranca and Anna Maria IV Di Giovanni. Located on the slopes of Etna, Trecastagni has repeatedly suffered the consequences of the volcano’s violent eruptions.
The most important monuments of the village are the Mother Church, built in 1789 with a majestic main portal enriched by Ionic columns and precious decorations. The interior has impressive frescos and decorations that take inspiration from the Italian painter Brunelleschi; the Church of Misericordia which is one of the oldest holy places of the village, hosts a wonderful dome characterized by frescos and floral patterns; the Convent of Padri Minori Riformati, built in 1660, includes a beautiful cloister with a huge tank. Close to the cloister there is the tiny Church of Sant’Antonio which has a monumental carved walnut main altar and impressive works of art made in the 17th century; the Santuario dei SS.MM. Alfio Filadelfo Cirino, erected in 1593, has a Gothic ring bell and a series of golden statues made in the 18th century.
